Be Mine, Melamine

Melamine, that hard plastic workhorse that began it's life on naval vessels, is enjoying a renaissance as an oh-so-hip addition to the modern tabletop. It is virtually unbreakable, dishwasher (but not microwave) friendly and safe to use. (The situation with melamine in the dogfood from China is not a concern with melamine dishes). Melamine tabletop comes in a wide range of patterns and prices, with everyone from Jonathan Adler to Target jumping into the mix. At the higher end of the spectrum ($10 Adler dinner plates like the fishy one below, $20 French Bull serving platters from Plum Party like the one shown above), melamine dishes are ideal for informal or outdoor dining.

At the lower end of the price spectrum (Target), these dishes are a fancier alternative to paper party-ware, at only a slightly higher cost. Herewith, so of my favorites of the crop. More fab French Bull melamine from Plum Party.

Pink "Rattan" by Whim by Cynthia Rowley at Target.

For summer entertaining, sea creatures from West Elm.

And coral from Target online.

I have long longed for this set of four "Tweet" melamine plates (turquoise peacock plate pictured) from Fred Flare.

My Little Dish has every kind of kid plate you can imagine -- boy themes, girl themes, birthday (pictured) and custom orders for around $14 a plate. I will be buying these for kid presents from now on!!!
